Otium

“Otium” is a Latin term with no direct equivalent in English, often translated as “leisure time”. It refers to a period of time that is free from work or duties, which can be used for rest, relaxation, or the pursuit of activities that one enjoys and that contribute to one’s personal growth and well-being. In ancient Roman culture, otium was highly valued and was considered an opportunity for intellectual and creative activities, especially among the elite, who could afford the luxury of time away from the demands of public life (negotium). Otium was seen not just as time off, but as a state of peace and balance, often associated with the countryside, contemplation, scholarly pursuits, and the arts.
