HECATOMB

A hecatomb is an ancient Greek term that refers to a sacrifice of 100 cattle to the gods. This term has its origins in the practices of ancient Greek religion, where large-scale sacrifices were made to appease deities, seek their favor, or thank them for their blessings. Over time, the word has evolved in its usage and can now also metaphorically refer to a large-scale slaughter or sacrifice, or a great loss of life, not necessarily involving animals or religious practices. The term emphasizes the magnitude and grandeur of the event, reflecting its origins from a time when such sacrifices were a significant communal and religious activity.
