IMAGE

A copy, to imitate –

The word “image” has a rich meaning and etymology:

  1. Meaning: An image is a representation of the external form of a person or thing in art. It can also refer to a likeness, appearance, or impression of something, created through various means such as painting, photography, or digital creation. In broader terms, it can also mean a mental representation or an idea.
  2. Etymology: The word “image” comes from the Old French “image”, from the Latin “imago”, which means a copy, likeness, or statue. The Latin term is likely derived from the root of “imitari” meaning to imitate. This origin ties back to the concept of an image as a form of imitation or representation of reality.

Become the Übermensch

The concept of the “Übermensch” (often translated as “Overman” or “Superman”) originates from the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, particularly from his work “Thus Spoke Zarathustra.” It represents a set of ideas that are quite complex and open to various interpretations. Here are some key points:

  1. Beyond Traditional Morality: The Übermensch transcends traditional morality, which Nietzsche saw as life-denying and based on slave-morality. Instead, the Übermensch embodies master-morality, which values pride, strength, and individual nobility.
  2. Self-Mastery and Creation of Values: The Übermensch is someone who has mastered himself and his passions, has overcome his human nature, and is capable of creating his own values and determining his own meaning of life.
  3. Beyond Good and Evil: This concept is closely associated with Nietzsche’s idea of moving “beyond good and evil.” The Übermensch doesn’t abide by conventional moral standards but creates his own system of values.
  4. Existential and Artistic Living: The Übermensch lives life artistically and existentially, constantly striving to be better and to rise above the common herd, breaking away from the mediocrity of the everyday man.
  5. Not a Superior Race or Physical Being: It’s important to note that Nietzsche’s concept of the Übermensch is not about physical superiority or a superior race. It’s more about a state of being and mindset that transcends ordinary human concerns and morality.

The Übermensch is a controversial and often misunderstood concept. It has been variously interpreted and reinterpreted over time, sometimes in ways that Nietzsche himself might not have intended or agreed with.

Only trust thoughts that come to you while outdoors

Friedrich Nietzsche, the German philosopher, is known for a quote that highlights the value of thoughts that come when one is in nature. The quote goes:

“All truly great thoughts are conceived by walking.”

This emphasizes Nietzsche’s belief in the creative and philosophical power of walking and being outdoors. It reflects his view that engaging with the natural world can stimulate the mind in unique and profound ways.

Aristotle’s philosophy

Aristotle, one of the most influential philosophers in history, made significant contributions across various fields, including metaphysics, ethics, politics, and aesthetics. Some key aspects of his philosophy include:

  1. Empiricism and Rationalism: Aristotle believed in empirical observation and logic. He advocated for the study of the natural world through observation and reason, contrasting with Plato’s emphasis on the Forms (idealized, abstract entities).
  2. Four Causes: In explaining why things exist or occur, Aristotle introduced the concept of four causes: material (what something is made of), formal (the form or arrangement of something), efficient (the cause or agent that brings something into being), and final (the purpose or function of something).
  3. Potentiality and Actuality: These concepts are central to his metaphysics. Potentiality refers to the capacity to change or develop into something else, while actuality is the fulfillment of this potential.
  4. Virtue Ethics: In ethics, Aristotle proposed that the goal of human life is to achieve eudaimonia, often translated as ‘happiness’ or ‘flourishing’. This is attained by practicing virtues, which are habits or dispositions to act in ways that balance the excess and deficiency of our passions and actions.
  5. Politics and Society: Aristotle believed that humans are naturally social and political beings, and the state is a natural institution. He emphasized the importance of a political system that promotes the well-being of all citizens.
  6. Logic: Aristotle is also known for his formalization of logic, particularly the syllogism, which is a form of reasoning where a conclusion is drawn from two given or assumed premises.

Aristotle’s philosophy is vast and diverse, covering practical and theoretical aspects of human existence and the natural world. His ideas have had a profound impact on Western thought and continue to be studied and debated today.

Street photography is great because there are no rules or guidelines to follow.

Street photography is an ethos –

“Ethos” is a term that originates from ancient Greek, meaning “character” and is used to describe the guiding beliefs or ideals that characterize a community, nation, or ideology. In the context of rhetoric, which is the art of persuasion, ethos refers to the credibility or trustworthiness of the speaker or writer. It’s one of the three modes of persuasion identified by the philosopher Aristotle, along with pathos (emotional appeal) and logos (logical argument). In this rhetorical sense, when someone has ethos, they effectively convey authority, credibility, and reliability, making their argument more persuasive.

Philly thoughts

Philadelphia is the perfect city. I can walk the entire perimeter every day before the sun even rises. The city is extremely accessible by foot, which allows me to practice my street photography endlessly. I enjoy walking through the variety of different spaces, whether the parks, riverside, the historic old city, center city, inside of the malls, the grand Wanamaker building with performances every day by the world’s largest playing pipe organ. There’s a variety of neighborhoods to traverse, diverse people, a beautiful bike trail that seems to never end, woodlands, hillsides, bridges, and pretty much everything you need to continue exploring endlessly.
