Autotelic Street Photography

The goal is to have fun

The ultimate reward derives from within. The autotelic approach is all about making new pictures and having fun. Consider yourself a flaneur in your hometown. Walk the streets carelessly without any preconceived ideas of what you will find and simply allow your intuition and curiosity to lead you. Photograph with intention and intensity, but be playful and don’t take yourself so seriously.

The term “autotelic” comes from the Greek words “auto,” meaning “self,” and “telos,” meaning “goal” or “purpose.” In essence, it refers to something that has its goal or purpose within itself. This concept is often applied to activities that are pursued for their own sake, with the enjoyment or fulfillment derived from the activity itself being the primary goal, rather than any external reward or outcome. The term is frequently used in psychology, particularly in the context of flow experiences, where an activity is so engaging and enjoyable that it becomes an end in itself.

Make pictures for the sake of making pictures

Imagine if nobody sees your work, or your photographs, would you still photograph? When you let go of the outcomes, you’re free to experiment and open up your creative potential. Through making more pictures, you’ll find what you prefer in a photograph and recognize what your specific vision is. When you allow yourself to make new pictures in the autotelic approach, it’s a liberating feeling and stress-free. Treat every photograph as a stream of becoming and always recognize that it’s onto the next one.

What will reality manifest to be in a photograph?

This is the question that keeps me coming outside every single day. Life is unpredictable and full of beauty. Through observing every day life with your camera, you have the power to fuel your lust for life. Remember, street photography requires time spent making the pictures. Because of this, I suggest keeping the camera small and compact that you can always carry with you. Embrace imperfection and allow yourself to photograph with spontaneity. The autotelic approach to street photography is all about finding joy in the process itself.
