Golden Hour for Street Photography

Golden Hour for Street Photography

What’s popping people, it’s Dante, and today we’re talking about the golden hour—my favorite time of day to photograph. If you’re serious about street photography, this is the time to get out there. Almost all of my most successful images were made during this magical window.

Why Golden Hour is the Best

Golden hour typically falls between 6:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. in the summer here in Philadelphia. The light during this time is soft, warm, and low, creating long shadows and a beautiful glow that transforms the ordinary into something extraordinary.

“Golden hour is when the sun kisses the skin and every shadow becomes part of the story.”

High Success Rate for Abstracts

If you love playing with light and shadow, golden hour is your playground. On any corner where light filters through, you can create stunning abstract compositions. The contrast between light and shadow gives your photos a dynamic edge that’s hard to achieve during other times of the day.

“You can pretty much play in the light and fish for images anywhere. It’s pure fun.”

Boost Your Exposure Compensation

When shooting during golden hour, you’ll often find yourself shooting directly into the sun or with the sun behind you. Depending on the direction of the light, you might need to tweak your settings.

  • Facing the Sun: Boost your exposure compensation to around +2 to balance the harsh backlight.
  • Sun Behind You: Enjoy the natural glow on your subjects, which makes for flattering skin tones and soft shadows.

Market Street Vibes

If you’re in Philadelphia, head to Market Street during golden hour. On Wednesdays, with events like Center City Sips, the streets are packed with people heading to bars or wrapping up their day. It’s the perfect spot to capture candid moments and street life at its liveliest.

“I walk back and forth, tanning my body and snapping photos. It’s an unbeatable combo—sun, fun, and photography.”

Why It’s Superior

Sure, you can shoot at any time of day, but golden hour reigns supreme. Harsh midday light can cast unflattering shadows on faces and make scenes feel flat. Golden hour, on the other hand, provides the perfect balance of light and shadow, adding depth and warmth to your photos.

“Morning or evening, golden hour has no competition. This is the superior time to photograph, hands down.”

Get Out and Play

So, grab your camera and hit the streets during golden hour. Whether you’re chasing light, capturing shadows, or simply enjoying the energy of the city, this time of day guarantees memorable results.

“Walk along and sing your song. Follow the beat of the street, enjoy the heat, and play in the light—everything will be all right.”

Golden hour is a gift for street photographers. Don’t waste it—get out there, and let the light guide you.

Ricoh GRIII for Street Photography

Ricoh GRIII for Street Photography

What’s popping people, it’s Dante. Today, let’s talk about why the Ricoh GRIII is my go-to camera for street photography. This compact powerhouse offers everything you need for capturing the streets in a discreet, intuitive, and efficient way.

Pocketability: The Ultimate Advantage

The Ricoh GRIII is incredibly pocketable. It’s small enough to fit comfortably in the palm of your hand or slip into your pockets—whether it’s your favorite Lululemon License to Train shorts or any casual outfit.

“The Ricoh GRIII is the most supreme pocketable device on the market for photography.”

Having a camera this small means you’re always ready to shoot, without lugging around heavy gear. Pair it with a GoPro Mini for videos, and you’ve got a perfect combo for capturing both stills and motion on the fly.

The Perfect Companion: Ricoh Leather Strap

Invest in the Ricoh leather strap for a seamless shooting experience. This strap keeps your camera secure on your wrist, allowing you to hold it at various angles—high, low, or discreetly to the side.

“With the Ricoh GRIII, you become one with the camera. Your eyes, hands, and the device are all connected.”

The ability to quickly switch from horizontal to vertical orientation or adjust your grip for grab shots enhances your fluidity on the street.

Discreet Photography

One of the Ricoh’s greatest strengths is how it lets you blend in. With its small size and quiet operation, you can shoot without drawing attention. Whether you’re using the Tourist Technique (appearing as though you’re casually reviewing photos) or the T-Rex Technique (holding the camera at your side), the Ricoh keeps you stealthy.

“We’re not sneaky; we’re just unobtrusive. We don’t disturb the peace—we capture it.”

Intuitive Shooting Experience

The Ricoh GRIII is designed for quick, intuitive use. I shoot in AV mode, set to f/8 all day, and rely heavily on exposure compensation. My custom setup minimizes menu diving:

  • Snap Focus: Quick adjustments for fast, sharp shots.
  • Minimal Button Use: Streamlined d-pad functionality for simplicity.

“No overthinking, only intuition. The Ricoh is always ready to shoot, making every moment count.”

Workflow and Pairing with iPad

The Ricoh pairs beautifully with an iPad Pro. I organize my photos by day and maintain a monochrome selection folder to keep track of my favorites. This workflow simplifies the editing process, letting me quickly review images like contact sheets.

“Straight-out-of-camera JPEGs from the Ricoh are aesthetically beautiful, saving time on post-processing.”

Why I Love the Ricoh GRIII

The Ricoh GRIII embodies everything I value in street photography gear:

  • Compact and discreet.
  • Fast and intuitive.
  • Aesthetic results straight out of the camera.

It’s a tool that allows you to stay in the moment, capturing life as it unfolds. No bulky equipment, no tedious setups—just pure, unfiltered creativity.

Whether you’re a seasoned street photographer or just getting started, the Ricoh GRIII is a game-changer. It’s built for those who value speed, simplicity, and stealth. So, grab one, hit the streets, and let your intuition guide you.
