It is a method for determining ranges by targeting an object or a surface with a laser and measuring the time for the reflected light to return to the receiver. A device similar to radar in principle and operation but using infrared laser light instead of radio waves and capable of detecting particles, distant objects, and varying physical conditions in the atmosphere.
