Street Photography at Parades and Events

Today I passed by City Hall and noticed that there was a flag raising for Kosovo Independence Day. I oftentimes observe these flag raising ceremonies throughout the year and photograph them. I always find that I have to wait until the end of the event to find anything interesting to photograph. This is because you usually have to sit through city council members, the mayor, and other people talking on the podium for a long time.

Shoot on the outskirts

Sometimes, when the event is over, I find much more interesting moments to photograph. The point is, you don’t have to photograph the action, or the obvious things at the event. As a street photographer, remain open to documenting the smaller moments and things that are often unnoticed.

Photograph the crowd

Typically with parades, ceremonies, events, etc. it’s more interesting to photograph the outskirts. You don’t always have to photograph the action itself, but sometimes focusing on the things that happen along the edges of the event are much more intriguing to photograph. When you’re at a parade or an event, photograph the crowd. Find yourself lost in the sea of people and focus your attention on the people viewing the event itself.
