Where to find inspiration for street photography

So when it comes to street photography, it seems like a lot of people are looking for some sort of inspiration or spark of creativity to get them going. I personally find most of my inspiration through my collection of photobooks. I find that photo books are the best way to inspire yourself as a photographer. Just find a few photographers that you enjoy and buy some of their books or go to your local library and check some out. Personally, the power of books always inspire me to travel somewhere new! Most recently, I have been enjoying the work by Raúl Cañibano: Absolute Cuba. Also, Daidō Moriyama: Dear Mr. Niépce is a gem I’ve been very inspired by.

Where to look online?

I used to find inspiration through browsing the Magnum archives, but it seems like it’s not that accessible anymore? It looks like you need to sign up and go through some process. I’m not really sure, but Magnum’s website is still a good resource. For contemporary street photography, I recommend these two sources to look at inspiring work: Street Fight and HCSP. The photographs are nicely curated and I believe really interesting. If you want to see a good variety of street photography online, stick to those two sources.

Where to buy photo books?

Honestly, just stick to Amazon. I was just in the Barnes and Noble recently looking for the latest Garry Winogrand: Winogrand Color, and it was listed at $85, but on Amazon it’s listed at around $60. Also, just check random small mom and pop book shops in your town. You never know what you can find there for good prices. It seems that the mainstream stores like Barnes and Noble is not worth browsing in terms of finding the best price.

Look at paintings

I recently had the great privilege of viewing some of Caravaggio’s work in Rome, which blew me away. I picked up Caravaggio: The Complete Works book of his collection of paintings to inspire me from a source that is not directly photography related. Caravaggio is certainly my favorite painter. Going forward, I am interested in light and shadow in my photography. His use of chiaroscuro is beautiful and gives me ideas for how I can use this in my photography practice.

Walk in nature

I think walking in nature once per day is a good way to stay inspired. As street photographers we can often get lost in the chaos. To disconnect from the hustle and bustle here and there is very beneficial for my creative thriving. Recognizing the natural beauty that exists in the world and our connection to this incredible planet helps me stay inspired and grateful to be alive. By walking in nature, it rejuvenates my spirits and helps me to go out there and shoot more photos!
