Why Compact Cameras Are Supreme

The ultimate reason why the compact camera is supreme for photography is because you can extend the camera in front of you. You can move it in ways that you can’t with a viewfinder or rangefinder-style camera.

And so I can get extremely close to things intuitively by just using the macro feature and looking at the back of my LCD screen. I can throw the camera up to different surfaces and photograph things that I otherwise wouldn’t have by raising the camera to my eye.

When I’m photographing this poster, there’s no way I’m gonna come up to this with my eye and photograph it. I’m gonna wind up limiting myself by using a viewfinder.

And so by removing the viewfinder, I can throw the camera in different ways and photograph extremely intuitively without the camera getting in the way.
